Placenta Encapsulation
What is it?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta for ingestion via capsules. This can help support one’s postpartum recovery period. While human research is currently limited (but growing), there are a good amount of animal studies that shed light on the many benefits of placenta consumption.
When the placenta is birthed, it takes along the many hormones and minerals that helped support the pregnancy. Some of these include hormones like estrogen and progesterone, human placental lactogen (stimulates the production of milk), relaxin (relaxes joints and ligaments), immune system stimulators and boosters (gamma-globulin and interferon), hemoglobin (to restore iron levels), and urokinase inhibiting factor and factor XIII (substances that enhance wound healing).
Sometimes, this postpartum drop in hormone and nutrient levels can cause symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, headaches, and night sweats. Placenta encapsulation may help to reduce these symptoms by increasing energy levels, maintaining balanced hormone levels, supporting a healthy milk production and aiding in restful sleep.
What does processing look like?
Your placenta will be processed within 1-2 days postpartum by steaming and dehydration. Afterwards, it is ground into a fine powder and placed into capsules. On average, you will receive 120-180 pills. This range is due to different placenta sizes yielding different amounts of pills.
